Helluva Week.

I'm having a migrane right now and the pain in my brain is excrutiating. I don't know if its due to the fact that I just spent the entire evening/night/wee hours of the morning finishing my sociology essay on globalisation..it's like hello economic geog in Jc oncemore..just that this time 'The Sim' is not here haha.

And its amazing how I refuse to proofread my essay cause I'm scared.
I smoked so much , there are only two possibilities:
firstly, that the smoke will blind the marker's eyes and he'll give me a fantastically good grade OR
the essay is going to catch fire and self-destruct..

Mango smoothie at 3 monkeys and omelette at cyber city the two previous nights do not seem to be such a fun idea on hindsight...if only we all had magical butts..Lol

Anyhow I think I had the best Journalism lecture I ever had so far on tuesday..the lecture was on visual journalism and the hour was spent debating the nobel winning picture 'The Vulture'.

Basically Kevin Carter, the photo journalist was waiting for the vulture to spread its wings and capture the shot. However, I reckon the one he got was powerful enough. Basically the African girl was on her way to the refugee camp but because she was too weak she couldn't even move and the vulture was waiting to pick on her carcass.

So he took the shot, then sat under a tree, lit a cigarette and cried as he thought of his daughter back home who was the same age as this African girl.
Subsequently, he won the nobel prize for this picture along with a truckload of criticism and committed suicide.

So here are the questions the lecturer post to us:
Do you think what he did was right?
What would you have done in his situation?
If you couldn't draw the line between what was acceptable and what was not would you place yourself in the situation whereby you have to make a choice..
the entire period was just debating but I heard really good arguements which were very enlightening..

those for what he did argued that the picture he took raised awareness and saved the life of many other children..in addition outsiders are not allowed to touch these African children because their immunity systems are too weak to withstand any viruses that we might carry..besides, there were other people around the refugee camp who did not do anything to help this little girl as well so why put the blood on the photographer's hands..

the opposition argued that while it was not wrong for him to take the picture, he should have tried to save the girl or made her dying more comfortable ..like held her in his arms so she wouldn't have to die alone..

personally the biggest issue I had was with him killing himself..I think at the very least you should be the person you are able to live with...which brings up the whole issue that as journalists, personal values are morals are very important because it determines the work you produce..so yeah really awesome lecture!
